Before this North London derby, there was talk of a power shift. Arsenal put that to bed with an excellent 2-0 win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates. The whole team were at their best from start to finish and the result was never in any doubt. Here are three players who impressed for Arsenal.
As well as scoring the opening goal, Shkodran Mustafi kept Spurs out at the other end. He made an excellent interception when Harry Kane’s shot seemed destined for the back of the net and overall he was composed and defensively solid. He also made the most clearances (14). Mustafi was absolutely superb on his return to the team and justified his selection ahead of club captain Per Mertesacker.
In games like these, the captain is expected to step up and lead the team. Laurent Koscielny did exactly that. He made sure that Harry Kane was kept quiet all game and was at the centre of Arsenal’s best defensive work. Koscielny was rested in midweek for France and that worked wonders for him against Spurs. Laurent Koscielny’s 300th appearance for Arsenal couldn’t have gone any better.
The man who is so often accused of going missing in big games. Mesut Ozil definitely showed up against Spurs. Along with the rest of his team-mates, Ozil was up for this derby and it was clear to see in his performance. He provided the assist for Mustafi’s goal and has created 34 chances for his team-mates this season – more than any other player in the Premier League. Mesut Ozil was on the winning side against Spurs for the first time in seven appearances and he fully deserved his Man of the Match award.
