Two title contenders meet each other in Women’s Super League 1 when Manchester City Women face Arsenal at the Academy Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. Both sides won their opening fixture of the new season so one of their perfect starts will come to an end, but whose will it be?Embed from Getty Images
Both sides have three points from their first game. Man City easily beat Yeovil Town Ladies. The visitors scored four goals and kept a clean sheet in a dominant display. Izzy Christiansen scored a penalty in the opening 10 minutes and Jane Ross increased City’s lead just before half-time. Second half strikes from Jill Scott and Georgia Stanway ensured that Man City came home with three points.
Arsenal’s victory was not so easy. They were at home to Birmingham City Ladies and seemed to have lost the match 2-1. Then Louise Quinn was sent off to make matters worse. However, Lisa Evans equalised and then Jodie Taylor dispatched a penalty right at the death to complete the comeback and give Arsenal all three points.
When these sides met in the one-off Spring Series, Arsenal came out on top thanks to a Jordan Nobbs free-kick. Arsenal were unbeaten in the Spring Series and were the only team to inflict defeat on Man City during the competition.
Their last meeting in the FA WSL 1 was also won 1-0 but by Man City in September 2016. Jane Ross’ deflected goal sealed the win.
This is a crucial game for both sides and they will be determined to win it to show the rest of the league that they mean business. I’m expecting plenty of goals but I think the final result will be 2-2.
